Blood Vessel 2023

Brad Anderson’s “Blood” strives to be both a grisly horror thriller and an examination of situational ethics, presenting viewers with a challenging scenario and urging them to reflect on their reactions. Unfortunately, it falls short on both counts, lacking the necessary horror intensity and failing to engage as an ethical exploration. Michelle Monaghan’s central performance as Jess, a nurse dealing with a tumultuous divorce while facing a life-threatening situation with her son, rises above the film’s weaknesses. The central theme of a parent’s extreme actions for their child’s survival is introduced but lacks coherence, hindering viewer empathy. Anderson, known for his success in horror, grapples with a convoluted plot that concludes with unintended laughter rather than fear. Despite Monaghan’s commendable effort and a few compelling scenes, “Blood” ultimately disappoints, unable to fulfill its potential and leaving the audience wanting more from its promising premise.
