Ben Wheatley’s “Meg 2: The Trench” falls far short of the director’s reputation for creativity and boundary-pushing. Unlike his previous works like “Kill List” and “In the Earth,” this sequel disappoints with a lackluster and unexciting narrative.
Jason Statham, typically known for his charismatic action roles, appears disinterested as Jonas, a deep-sea diver tasked with investigating the Megalodon. The film lacks the fun and intensity associated with Wheatley’s best works, leaving the audience wanting more.
The plot takes Jonas and his crew into the ocean trench, where they discover more giant sharks and an evil human operation mining the trench for resources. It’s only in the final half-hour, at Fun Island, that the film gains a semblance of life, but it’s too little, too late.
