Justin Simien takes the director’s chair in Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” featuring a star-studded cast including Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, and Danny DeVito. The film follows single mother Gabbie and her son Travis as they move into a haunted antique house. Seeking help from an eclectic group, including a priest, a medium, and an astrophysicist, they aim to rid the house of its supernatural occupants.
The film, despite the involvement of talented writer Katie Dippold, struggles with its execution. The script delivers forced and uninspired humor, with Wilson and Haddish shouldering most of the comedic burden. While there are sporadic playful chases and spooky moments, the film’s ability to sustain tension is lacking until the climactic third act.
“Haunted Mansion” explores themes of grief and vulnerability, offering some family-friendly spookiness. However, the underdeveloped characters and missed comedic opportunities prevent it from achieving Halloween classic status. Visit netnaija movies for more!
